Generally at acting auditions, the actors are required to read directly from the scripts of the production. Should the audition be successful, an actor will be asked for a call back for another audition. The three stage approach is a sensible starting point:
- Preparing: Acting auditions are essentially job interviews, and you must prepare for them to stand a chance. Try and research the play, series, or film online. If you are auditioning for a certain character then you should also not only research that part but research about the company you are auditioning for, the director and the writer. This proves dedication and it also means that you will have some idea about the type of actors the director may be looking for.
- Performance: In acting auditions, you need to be positive, friendly and confident. If you are nervous, remember that everyone in the room is rooting for you because they want to find the right actor. Don’t ask too many questions because it will eat into your ‘shine’ time. Serious questions should be saved for call-backs. Monologues, if prepared by you, should be no longer than 2 minutes and always have a back up monologue you know equally well to show your range and diversity.
- Result: Always prepare yourself for rejection just in case, as there are many actors that will go through this until they land the perfect role that launches their career.
