Thursday, October 27th, 2011

The lure of TV is hard to ignore. Soap stars and other actors enjoy such fame that it isn’t hard to see why so many people aspire to being TV stars, and if you’ve got the talent and the determination to succeed there’s no reason why you can’t give it a go. But just how do you get your first TV job?Well, some kind of acting skill will always be a prerequisite to making it big. Ideally you’ll want acting lessons to nurture your talent, or if you’ve got natural flair you could go straight into extras work – either way, starting out with a smaller part is often the way that many TV actors begin. You’ll probably want to be an extra as a stepping stone for bigger and better things, and these smaller roles can be a great way to get your foot in the door and can easily get you noticed by the people that matter. If you make the right impression you never know what other opportunities could arise, but you’re only going to get these roles if you find out where auditions are happening in the first place. That’s why you need to sign up to our text alert service. For just £1.50 per text (max 3 texts/week, over 18s only) you can get details of all the best extras auditions taking place so you’ll be in the right place at the right time, and we even provide seminars and training courses to help improve your skills. Getting that first TV job will come down to a combination of talent, preparation and luck, but if you get in touch you stand a much better chance of success.

What Not to Do at an Acting Audition

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Acting auditions are the actor’s version of a job interview, and so should be treated in much the same way, whether they be for a soap, a play, a reality TV show or for a part as an extra. You need to follow the basic rules of showing up on time, dressing smartly and being polite. You also need to make sure you are well prepared and follow any instructions you are given, either on the day or beforehand. But what about what not to do at those casting calls? If you are sat or stood with a group at any point, don’t hide at the back. You need to show that you are confident, so this also means making eye contact wherever possible (without being too intense, of course!). Also, while mentioning confidence, be careful not to go over the top or act like you’ve already got the part. However, neither should you be overly apologetic if things don’t go quite to plan.Whether you want to be on TV or work in the theatre, you may have trouble getting those first few auditions. Our text subscription service informs you of when auditions are happening by sending you up to three text alerts per week (costing £1.50 per text) with all the information you need. We also hold workshops and training sessions if you want further advice on what to do and what not to do once you’ve got an audition. Please note, our service is for over 18s only, however.

Become a Reality TV Star

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

You might be surprised how many famous TV presenters or actors started out on reality TV shows, quizzes or game shows. There are the obvious people like Brian Dowling who has made his way from the bottom to the top of the ‘Big Brother’ tree, but did you know about some less well-known routes into show business? Konnie Huq of ‘Blue Peter’ fame started off with a stint as a contestant on ‘Blockbusters’ while studying for her A-levels, and Amanda Holden was a pickee on ‘Blind Date’. If you are thinking of becoming an actor, going to some reality TV auditions can be a real insight into the business and help you make up your mind once and for all.Auditions for a reality TV show are a great way to be on TV without having any pesky lines to learn, and who knows what it may lead to? With any reality TV show, the producers know what they are looking for before the auditionees even turn up. The first thing you will probably have to do before you even get an audition is send in an audition tape, which will be your first make or break. Knowing when a brand new show will be auditioning can also be hard to find out and that’s why we offer you our expert help here at Audition Now, with text alerts up to three times weekly (costing £1.50 each, over 18s only) to let you know when auditions are taking place.

Succeed Your Musical Theatre Audition

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

If you have the dream to work in musical theatre, the first hurdle is actually getting yourself invited to a musical casting call, which can be hard to find out about, particularly if you are not already based in the heart of the West End or another theatre district. You can easily overcome this hurdle by signing up for our text alerts (a maximum of three per week, £1.50 each, over 18s only) which will let you know when all the latest casting calls are happening. Having landed an audition, however, you then need to find the best way to impress the casting directors. You may not always have the opportunity to choose the song yourself, but if you do, pick one that suits your vocal range so that you feel comfortable while you are singing it. It may sound obvious, but for musical theatre auditions, pick a song that comes from musical theatre, although try and choose one that is less common so that the directors won’t be bored and will remember you for being different. Although microphones are used in musical theatre nowadays, you will still need to project your voice as loud as you can without losing the tune. Some obvious things to remember are also to make sure you turn up on time, and are polite and courteous at all times, including saying thank you even if you’ve been rejected. You might not have been right for that part, but the director may bear you in mind for another in the future.
