Creating the Perfect Modelling Portfolio

Friday, July 29th, 2011

For aspiring models, their portfolio is one of their most important tools. It’s a way of illustrating their potential to model agencies and casting directors. However, many would-be models make major errors with their portfolios, ruining their chances of ever having success in that field. There are various things you can do to make model portfolios perfect.

•    A modelling portfolio doesn’t have to contain every single photograph that’s ever been taken of you. Choose between ten and twenty of your favourite images to feature in your portfolio.

•    Many people make the mistake of looking overly made up in their portfolio. The aim of the portfolio should be to showcase your potential. Although you can include some photographs where you are made up, you should also include some where you look more natural.

•    Don’t just wear your favourite outfit in all your portfolio shots. The photographs should demonstrate your versatility, showcasing how you look in a variety of different outfits.

•    Look through as many fashion magazines as you can prior to your portfolio shoot. This should help to inspire you. You can even emulate some of the poses showcased in the magazine to help you look like a ‘real’ model.

When you’ve perfected your modelling portfolio, you’re ready to start attending auditions. Audition now can notify you via text of the latest model auditions in your area (£1.50 per text with max 3 texts per week). This service can be used by people of 18 years and over only.

Starting Off Small to Break into Modelling

Monday, May 30th, 2011

There is a kind of fairytale about breaking into modelling. Build up a good profile, be in the right place at the right time, and you might be noticed by the editor of Vogue, who will fall in love with your look and insist that you be on next month’s cover. In reality it doesn’t usually happen that way. Like breaking into any field, becoming a glamour model is mostly a matter of hard work rather than a single lucky break.

Start small and build up slowly. Being a catalogue model might not be your ultimate ambition in life but it’s well worth getting experience in the less star-studded aspects of the business. It’s often easier to get a toehold because there are less people striving to get into catalogues than magazines or television and you never know who you might meet on set. Every photographer you work with is a valuable industry contact.

Having a diverse photo profile, from swimsuit shots to evening wear and everything in between, shows off your full range. If you can include one or two catalogue shots – even if they look a bit boring to you – it shows that you’re willing to work hard and that you’ve got professional experience as a model. Don’t despair if you don’t get noticed straight away. In reality nobody does. It doesn’t mean you won’t get there in the end.

Model audition texts cost £1.50 each and we offer a maximum of 3 per week. Subscribers must be over 18.

Modelling Mums

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Glamour modelling is just one tiny part of the whole industry. The overwhelming majority of models are ordinary people and they appear at local fashion shows, in newspapers and all kinds of magazines, on television and in catalogues. Most men and women who are paid to be models aren’t professionals. Some want to be, others are quite happy just doing one or two model jobs now and again.

Modelling is mostly occasional work rather than a full time job and that means it’s open to anybody with a little free time. If you need a dash of extra excitement and can be available for a day or a half-day at reasonably short notice, becoming a part time model is perfect. It’s great fun, your friends will all be jealous, and of course, it puts some extra cash in your pocket.

Stay-at-home mums can often find a modelling work that fits in around their other commitments. You don’t have to look like you’ve just stepped off the set of a James Bond movie either. Most catalogues and large family department stores want models who look like ordinary, approachable people. They want casual clothes modelled, not strange catwalk masterpieces.

Finding work is the tricky part. You can approach a model agency, but that is sometimes hard work in itself. You’ll need an extensive portfolio for a start. An easier way in is to get text alerts when suitable model jobs pop up. We can send you up to 3 texts per week (provided you are 18 or over) for just £1.50 each.
