Starting Off Small to Break into Modelling

Monday, May 30th, 2011

There is a kind of fairytale about breaking into modelling. Build up a good profile, be in the right place at the right time, and you might be noticed by the editor of Vogue, who will fall in love with your look and insist that you be on next month’s cover. In reality it doesn’t usually happen that way. Like breaking into any field, becoming a glamour model is mostly a matter of hard work rather than a single lucky break.

Start small and build up slowly. Being a catalogue model might not be your ultimate ambition in life but it’s well worth getting experience in the less star-studded aspects of the business. It’s often easier to get a toehold because there are less people striving to get into catalogues than magazines or television and you never know who you might meet on set. Every photographer you work with is a valuable industry contact.

Having a diverse photo profile, from swimsuit shots to evening wear and everything in between, shows off your full range. If you can include one or two catalogue shots – even if they look a bit boring to you – it shows that you’re willing to work hard and that you’ve got professional experience as a model. Don’t despair if you don’t get noticed straight away. In reality nobody does. It doesn’t mean you won’t get there in the end.

Model audition texts cost £1.50 each and we offer a maximum of 3 per week. Subscribers must be over 18.

Modelling Mums

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Glamour modelling is just one tiny part of the whole industry. The overwhelming majority of models are ordinary people and they appear at local fashion shows, in newspapers and all kinds of magazines, on television and in catalogues. Most men and women who are paid to be models aren’t professionals. Some want to be, others are quite happy just doing one or two model jobs now and again.

Modelling is mostly occasional work rather than a full time job and that means it’s open to anybody with a little free time. If you need a dash of extra excitement and can be available for a day or a half-day at reasonably short notice, becoming a part time model is perfect. It’s great fun, your friends will all be jealous, and of course, it puts some extra cash in your pocket.

Stay-at-home mums can often find a modelling work that fits in around their other commitments. You don’t have to look like you’ve just stepped off the set of a James Bond movie either. Most catalogues and large family department stores want models who look like ordinary, approachable people. They want casual clothes modelled, not strange catwalk masterpieces.

Finding work is the tricky part. You can approach a model agency, but that is sometimes hard work in itself. You’ll need an extensive portfolio for a start. An easier way in is to get text alerts when suitable model jobs pop up. We can send you up to 3 texts per week (provided you are 18 or over) for just £1.50 each.

When it Comes to Catwalk Modelling, the Show Must Go On

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Modelling is all about achieving perfection. That is why industry professionals responsible for choosing people at model auditions and model casting sessions go to such great lengths to select the ideal candidates. Also, this accounts for the painstaking attention to detail that goes into photo shoots. Every aspect of the images is controlled, from lighting to scenery, clothing and make-up.

The great thing about magazine modelling and other such things is that if there is a problem with one shot, plenty more can be taken. And the final product can be tweaked and enhanced digitally after the shoot has finished.

In contrast, catwalk modelling relies on getting it right first time. A form of performance art, this occurs in front of a live audience of people, all eagerly watching the event unfold.

For this reason, if you want to get involved in this particular specialism, you have to learn to deal with the pressure and to ensure that your runway walks are great each time. However, even with the best will in the world and years of experience, it is impossible to entirely rule out problems.

But the important thing is to remember that the show must go on. If you lose your balance slightly, turn in the wrong way, drop an accessory or commit any other error, you should carry on as though nothing has happened. If the accident was minor, most people may not have noticed, but even when the audience are aware, there is nothing you can do but carry on as professionally as you can.

To take advantage of our auditions messaging service you must be 18 or over – £1.50 per text, maximum of three texts per week.

Do you Have what it Takes to Become a Model?

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

If you want to make it in the modelling business, there are many qualities you must possess. The most obvious and arguably most important one is clearly the appropriate look. Whether you want to become a fashion model, glamour model or anything else, your appearance must suit the market you are aiming for.

However, this is not where the story ends. There are many people who have looked perfect for their chosen role and yet have not been able to carve successful careers for themselves. This is because it takes more than the right body and face to prove a hit among professionals in the industry.

It is also vital that you are punctual and reliable. While the headlines are often about diva models who get up to all sorts of mischief without any major consequences, the reality is that in the world of the typical, hard-working model it is important to turn up to shoots on time and in the right frame of mind.

Also, you must be able to take instruction from the photographer and be willing to follow direction, as this is crucial for the overall success of the images taken.

Meanwhile, you need to be confident and self-assured, without being cocky. After all, because of the competitive nature of the industry, you will inevitably have to deal with rival models intent on unsettling you. Being able to rise above this and keep your cool is therefore necessary.

As long as you master these other traits, you stand every chance of success.

Remember, if you want to use our text messaging auditions service, you must be aged 18 or over. It costs £1.50 per text, with a maximum of 3 texts per week.

Perfect your Runway Technique

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

There are many different forms of modelling and before you try to break into the industry, you will have to decide which particular branch you are keen to focus on. For example, you may decide to become a fashion model. This can be one of the most exciting routes to take and, if you are lucky, your catwalk modelling could ensure you see many places around the world.

However, there is no way you will rise to the top if you do not perfect your runway walk first. Catwalks can be daunting and you must be able to strut your stuff with confidence and finesse. After all, the designers whose clothes you wear during such events want the garments to look their very best, which means you have to be on top form.

When you start practicing, you should keep your chin level, hold your buttocks tight, keep your shoulders back and swing both arms evenly. Also, rather than making fists or holding your hands straight, you should curl your fingers. Meanwhile, long, smooth strides are desirable and you ought to keep your mouth shut.

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of the points to bear in mind, but they are some of the most important. As with many things in life, it is a case of practice makes perfect. So make sure you put in plenty of time learning the art of runway walking.

And for an extra chance of success, you might want to consider using our auditions messaging service. To be eligible, you must be aged 18 or above and texts cost £1.50, with a maximum of 3 texts per week.
