Auditions can be a stressful experience and everyone gets nervous at times but there are some things you can do to help you to stay calm under pressure.

Make sure your CV and photo portfolio are up-to-date. If you will be auditioning for a specific role then do some research in advance so that you know what the director may be looking for. Rehearse your audition pieces beforehand and make sure they’re appropriate to the role.

Try to get an early night the evening before your audition and avoid drinking too much alcohol. You don’t want to arrive with dark circles under your eyes, or a hangover. If your casting call is before or during a mealtime then make sure to eat before you arrive, but avoid foods with a strong aroma such as onions or garlic.

If you’re going somewhere new then ensure that you know where you’re going. Research alternative transport options and take a map if you’re going to an unfamiliar location. Try to arrive early for open acting auditions so that you have time to look over any audition script.

When you are called in take a deep breath and then breathe out slowly. Relax your jaw, if you’ve tensed it, and smile. Remember to be yourself during your interview. Smile and make eye contact with the director.

To make it easier for you to find acting casting calls just sign up to our text alert service here at Audition Now. You must be 18 years and over. Texts cost £1.50 each and you’ll receive a maximum of 3 texts per week.

Auditions are like job interviews. When you go along to the very first one you’ll be nervous and probably won’t have a clear idea of what will be expected of you. When you get a little more experience you’ll be used to the audition process and you’ll know what the casting staff expect and how to provide it. You’ll get less nervous – the unknown is always scary – and be able to show off your talents more effectively.

Sure, there are shortcuts, from taking classes put on by other actors or just talking to friends who work in the industry, but there really is no substitute for experience. The only way to get that experience is to get as much practice as possible. Get involved in as many casting calls you can.

It doesn’t even matter if the audition doesn’t quite match what you really want to do. Going through West End auditions will help you with dance casting more generally, so even if you don’t want to end up in the chorus of a musical, attending the try-outs will help you when the perfect modern dance opportunity pops up. When your dream job arrives you don’t want to be an audition beginner.

And you never know – you might surprise yourself and get a job you didn’t expect. Some actors start off in Shakespeare and move to the soaps, some go in the other direction. Trying different things will help enhance your portfolio as well as making you an audition pro.

The Audition Now text service is open only to those 18 years or over. We offer a maximum of 3 texts per week at £1.50 each.

You don’t have to aspire to a full time acting career to experience the excitement of being on telly. In fact, if you were to count the faces in the next episode of your favourite soap or crime drama, only a handful of faces would be familiar regulars. All the rest would be guests or extras, most of which only appear on a single episode.

It doesn’t take much to be an extra. The audition process won’t involve hours of singing, dancing, and declaiming long passages from Hamlet. Experienced casting staff know what they want and how to find it quickly and with a minimum of fuss. Although your part might only be a few seconds long you will probably have to be available for filming all day or at least for several hours, but being on set is all part of the fun.

Sometimes you’ll be part of a crowd or sitting behind the main characters in a cinema or cafe. Other times you might be dead in a car accident or- if you’re really lucky – get a small speaking part as a cashier or a waitress interacting with your favourite character. The role of an extra is never demanding but it’s always exciting to find out what you’ll be doing.

Casting calls for extras happen all the time. Our alert service offers up to 3 texts a week for only £1.50 each. Anyone who is over 18 and has a little ‘extra’ time on their hands can go to auditions and be on TV.

2010 was the year “Big Brother” finally puffed out its last gasp of air and left our screens forever. No worries, we had “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” and about a thousand hours of “X Factor” to keep us on the straight and narrow!

Reality TV auditions were once the stage for everyman, especially back in the early 2000s; and then for the wackiest people in the mid noughties. Now we have finally hit upon the idea that balance is needed, and that simply put – everybody has a shot! The quite-hot guy, the noisy science nerd, the bookish rock-climbing fanatic, the girl next door, the silver surfer, the mother, the grandfather, the biker, the librarian – everybody’s in!

The phenomenon of reality TV knocked us off our feet back in the kindergarten days of Big Brother 1 (remember the naked mud painting!), but just as magazine makeover features spewed forth the extreme surgery shows we know (and secretly love!) today, the appeal of watching normal people argue over milk had gotten tired, leading us to the interesting perspective of viewing extreme reality TV as somehow more real than, well, reality!

Want to be on TV? Reality TV casting is still one of our most popular industry areas. Reality TV is certainly not dead! It has simply evolved from the ashes of Big Brother, Shipwrecked and Pop Stars, to bring Reality TV Version 2.0 to the forefront of our greedy viewing pleasures!

Please bear in mind that if you’re under 18, we can’t provide our auditions service to you (£1.50 per text, maximum of three texts per week).

Treading the boards – to some, nothing compares. Even the most seasoned pro occasionally succumbs to the dreaded stage fight!

Get through that initial moment of terror by calmly thinking, “this is just my reality right now. Not forever.”

Often, a major stress-factor in any performance (no matter how far past the auditions or casting calls) is the strange sense that floods your body, telling you that the fear will last forever. Think back to the days of school exams; that feeling that a two hour maths exam seemed to occupy a slightly different point in space and time that somehow stretched on for at least eighteen hours! Similarly, no moment of fear can last forever. Feel it. Think about the next moment, a moment in which you are fine, and go there.

In the words of the Girl Guides, Be Prepared. Turning up to auditions or casting calls spluttering apologies of lateness, stumbling onto the stage and trying to read your monologue off the back of your hand just isn’t going to fly with anyone. You need to know your stuff inside and out. Prepare extra work, try to guess what direction a potentially odd audition could go and ponder on it, at least a little, before the big day.

Focus on the little things, like breathing! The advice to “take a deep breath” is legendary for a good reason – it works.

Please note that you need to be 18 years and over to our service (£1.50 per text with max of three texts per week).

Actors often feel nervous about acting auditions because they are not sure of the image they project of themselves before the audition panel. You have your contrasting prepared pieces, and you have learned them and prepared them so that you are totally secure – but how do you look?

Sometimes you can ask family or friends to hear you recite a piece, but it is hard to get an objective response from people you know. An objective response is what you will have at auditions, so it is worth your while trying to ascertain that.

A good tip is to video your audition material. This need not involve any great expense, because the quality for you is in the performing – not in the video itself. Try to analyse your efforts as critically as possible. Note the inflection of your voice, note any mannerisms in gesture, and try several versions in different clothing, so that you learn how that affects the final performance. Try to recall exactly how you achieved particular results, so that you can easily replicate that if you think it’s effective.

To paraphrase the Scots poet Robert Burns, you want is to see yourself as others see you. The more you can correlate what you see with what you think you are doing, the surer you will be of your results.

Here at Audition Now we specialise in results; getting all the latest and best casting calls and acting opportunities texted straight away to your mobile phone.

An actor with experience in both film and stage work gets used to the different performance styles relevant to each discipline. Casting to type is typically the norm for screen media, whereas for stage auditions your actual looks matter less than how you present them.

The great film actor and director Clint Eastwood quotes the drama coach who used to tell him, ‘Don’t just do something, stand there.’ In film the actor’s performance is centred on economy, and that economy demands a particular discipline from the performer. Very often where you would expect an expansive gesture, you have to look for the most minimal realisation of the moment. You can’t expect to pace about or wave your arms: you have to concentrate the emotion in your face, or in the smallest, most telling hand movement.

The greatest actors are at home both onstage and onscreen. This is because, in truth, the difference is only one of degree. The rule for film auditions is ‘do less’; onstage you work at achieving the same intensity for emotional effect, but you have a greater range of expression available to you.

Whether you go to casting calls for film or television, or whether you go to West End auditions for the stage, it is in your interest to be able to adapt to both styles of acting. Here at Audition Now we give you the latest opportunities to put yourself on view, as that way you can make the most of your stage or screen talents.

When going to acting auditions or casting calls, actors devote most of their energy to their audition pieces or script sample. It is true, that unless you are totally confident with your material you will never convincingly acquit yourself in the audition.

However, there are additional factors that may seem trivial, but could also have an effect on the outcome. These include:

- Your manner, not only with the panel at the auditions, but also with fellow auditionees. Whether you are successful at this audition or not, it pays to never ‘close the door behind you’, and a positive, relaxed and friendly attitude creates as much of an impression as your acting skill.

- Your interest in the both the current project, and in the work of your audition panel. It doesn’t take much effort to learn a bit about who you are auditioning for: your interest in their work is a simple courtesy, but gives a lasting impression.

- Your punctuality. It sounds banal, but reliability is an asset in any actor, and a clue to that is if you turn up in good time for your auditions.

- What you wear. A choice of clothing that is sensitive to the demands of the role not only helps to show your aptitude for the part, but also demonstrates your imaginative understanding for the project.

At Audition Now we specialise in getting the best audition opportunities to our clients, whether they want to be on TV or star in a theatre production, and help them to make the most of their career potential.
