Creating the Perfect Modelling Portfolio

Friday, July 29th, 2011

For aspiring models, their portfolio is one of their most important tools. It’s a way of illustrating their potential to model agencies and casting directors. However, many would-be models make major errors with their portfolios, ruining their chances of ever having success in that field. There are various things you can do to make model portfolios perfect.

•    A modelling portfolio doesn’t have to contain every single photograph that’s ever been taken of you. Choose between ten and twenty of your favourite images to feature in your portfolio.

•    Many people make the mistake of looking overly made up in their portfolio. The aim of the portfolio should be to showcase your potential. Although you can include some photographs where you are made up, you should also include some where you look more natural.

•    Don’t just wear your favourite outfit in all your portfolio shots. The photographs should demonstrate your versatility, showcasing how you look in a variety of different outfits.

•    Look through as many fashion magazines as you can prior to your portfolio shoot. This should help to inspire you. You can even emulate some of the poses showcased in the magazine to help you look like a ‘real’ model.

When you’ve perfected your modelling portfolio, you’re ready to start attending auditions. Audition now can notify you via text of the latest model auditions in your area (£1.50 per text with max 3 texts per week). This service can be used by people of 18 years and over only.

Modelling Mums

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Glamour modelling is just one tiny part of the whole industry. The overwhelming majority of models are ordinary people and they appear at local fashion shows, in newspapers and all kinds of magazines, on television and in catalogues. Most men and women who are paid to be models aren’t professionals. Some want to be, others are quite happy just doing one or two model jobs now and again.

Modelling is mostly occasional work rather than a full time job and that means it’s open to anybody with a little free time. If you need a dash of extra excitement and can be available for a day or a half-day at reasonably short notice, becoming a part time model is perfect. It’s great fun, your friends will all be jealous, and of course, it puts some extra cash in your pocket.

Stay-at-home mums can often find a modelling work that fits in around their other commitments. You don’t have to look like you’ve just stepped off the set of a James Bond movie either. Most catalogues and large family department stores want models who look like ordinary, approachable people. They want casual clothes modelled, not strange catwalk masterpieces.

Finding work is the tricky part. You can approach a model agency, but that is sometimes hard work in itself. You’ll need an extensive portfolio for a start. An easier way in is to get text alerts when suitable model jobs pop up. We can send you up to 3 texts per week (provided you are 18 or over) for just £1.50 each.

As Luck Would Have It

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

“Nobody gets justice. People only get good luck or bad luck.” (Orson Welles)

There’s a reason arts professions use the term “lucky break”, and that’s because the recurring role of luck in this great movie of life is perhaps more significant than the best headshots or well-planned outfit. Some of the most eminent stars we love, blog about, watch, live up to and emulate exist as they do because of some sheer bit of luck somewhere.

Harrison Ford, disillusioned with the constant slog of auditions and Hollywood bit-parts, instead opted to train as a carpenter. After completing some work for George Lucas, Lucas called on his acting talents for a role in American Graffiti (1973). Several years of Lucas-fed work ensued until the role of Han Solo, and the rest is frozen in carbonite. Had Ford not all but given up acting for carpentry, he’d never have visited Lucas, and perhaps never have had the chance to appear on our screens, save the world and get the girl!

In terms of the modelling world, Kate Moss was plucked from post-vacation airport boredom in NYC by Storm model agency founder Sarah Doukas in 1988. A day, an hour, perhaps even a minute earlier or later, and one of our most significant fashion icons would just be another, regular girl.

The importance of luck and superstition is well-renowned in the capricious world of the arts, whether for auditions, castings, or model agency applications.

But remember, no matter your luck, you need to be 18 years and over to use our text auditions service (£1.50 per text with max of 3 texts per week).

Fancy a Career as a Model?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

If you think you have the stamina and perseverance (and the looks!) for a career in modelling, you will need to work out a strategy for getting yourself seen in all the right places. Unless you have uniquely striking looks, you will only get work through a modelling agency.  It is the modelling agencies that have the majority of contacts with the photographers and the advertising agencies, so they are best placed to offer the greatest amount of work.

The difficulty is to get yourself onto the books of a model agency. Although agencies are constantly on the look-out for new talent, it rarely happens that you can just walk uninvited into one of their offices and get taken on there and then. Usually, agencies advertise a public audition or casting calls in the press, but it is hard to keep yourself informed of all of these, especially if you want to be seen by a number of agencies.

The difficulty is compounded if you decide to consider agencies outside London. The advantage of looking further afield is that you not only have a wider choice, but you also are more likely to get yourself noticed outside the capital. Besides, it’s a good way to start out and gain experience. The problem is keeping up with what’s on offer.

Here at Audition Now, we offer comprehensive support to those looking for modelling jobs: an up-to-the-minute texting service, direct to your mobile phone, of all the latest work opportunities right across the country.
