Prop Awareness: On-Set Etiquette

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Let’s assume you’re fairly new to the acting game. You’ve passed the auditions stage, and now it’s time to get on set and perform to the masses.

On a production of any size, prop care and respect is incredibly important. Smaller productions generally can’t afford to lose or break props, whilst larger productions definitely need to keep a close eye on their comprehensive, high quality set and prop inventory.

Whatever the reason you’ve got into the acting game – to be on TV, to be an extra, to give the already-established film stars a run for their money – there are a few on-set manners to do with props you should be putting into practice no matter how great a star you may become.

•    Ask before touching or picking up any prop – no matter whether or not you think it could be yours. The job of a prop assistant is stressful, and made no easier by people picking up the props and misplacing them.
•    Safety first. If you’re unsure about how to use a prop, just ask for a little advice and direction. It might slow production for a moment, but better that than halting it thanks to injury or a broken prop.

No matter how great your on-set manners, you will need to be 18 years or over to use our service. The cost to receive up-to-the-minute information detailing all the latest acting, extras or modelling auditions is £1.50 per text, with a maximum of three texts per week.

How To Become A Model

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

It may seem like an impossible dream for some people to become a model, but it can actually be a lot easier than many people think. Companies will be looking for a wide range of shapes and sizes to model all sorts of things, meaning that there is a chance that something out there will be right for you.

The first thing you will need is the right modelling portfolio, having pictures that show off a wide variety of poses and styles, all of which should have strong poses and facial expressions. From there, it is simply a case of letting the right people see your shots and you could be in with a chance of fulfilling that dream of being a model.

It may take time, but as with all things perseverance will usually pay off, and it is important to know who is looking for which kind of models at any time. Audition Now updates you with all the latest modelling auditions so that you can make sure you get seen by the right people at the right time, no matter what type of model you want to be. And the great thing with these is that, even if you don’t get a certain job, you can be sure that the right people now have your portfolio and may well consider you for future campaigns.

The service is available to anyone aged 18 years and over, and you will receive a maximum of three texts per week, each charged at £1.50 per text.

Easy Ways to Break Into Modelling

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Have you always dreamed of being a fashion model? Maybe you know that you have what it takes but you’ve never been able to break in. How do you find those golden opportunities so you can make your big break? Here are some easy ways to break into modelling.

Model jobs can be notoriously difficult to obtain. Even those who sign on to a model agency sometimes have difficulty actually getting work, especially if they want enough work to keep them busy so that they don’t have to take another job to pay the bills.

One easy way to break in is to contact fashion stores, malls, magazines, and fashion Web sites directly with your portfolio (include a CV and recent photos) and ask about modelling opportunities. Some shops produce their own catalogues and can use local models.

Another way is to try a company like Audition Now. They guarantee you auditions relevant to your specific interest: modelling, TV acting, or theatre acting. You need to be at least 18 years old, but you can text up to three times a week (for £1.50 a text) to get information on the best local auditions. This is a great way to get the best information quickly.

You can also try to meet people in the modelling world. Ask everyone you know if they know any models or people who work for modelling agencies. Word of mouth is a great recommendation.

Good luck with your modelling career. Remember not to give up. If you have what it takes and you keep trying, eventually you will make it.

Perks and Pitfalls of Glamour Modelling

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

The stigma surrounding glamour modelling is one of seedy grotesqueness. However, the reality of the true definition is nothing so sordid.

Glamour photography is the portrayal of a woman (usually a model) in a romantic, provocative or sexual manner, usually for use in advertising or commercial print. In much the same way as the art of burlesque and stripping are linked, so too is the art of glamour photography, which tends to lead to blurred lines of what glamour modelling should truly entail.

In terms of different fields of glamour modelling, these range from lingerie or swimwear, right through to full nudity.

As far as body shape and size goes, most people are perfectly familiar with what body type is the most popular in terms of commercially successful glamour photography, for example ‘page three’ modelling. However, in other fields of glamour photography, requirements vary. Be aware that industry standards concerning bust size are there for the simple reason that they’re the most regularly in demand.

Glamour models, as in any field of modelling, need thick skin when it comes to criticism. Crying every time a photographer slates how toned you are or slams your posture will get you nowhere.

The rule of thumb tends to be that if you’re over 18 years old, you can give it a go. The same applies to our service here at Audition Now; we can only offer services to those 18 and over (£1.50 per text, maximum of three texts per week).

As Luck Would Have It

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

“Nobody gets justice. People only get good luck or bad luck.” (Orson Welles)

There’s a reason arts professions use the term “lucky break”, and that’s because the recurring role of luck in this great movie of life is perhaps more significant than the best headshots or well-planned outfit. Some of the most eminent stars we love, blog about, watch, live up to and emulate exist as they do because of some sheer bit of luck somewhere.

Harrison Ford, disillusioned with the constant slog of auditions and Hollywood bit-parts, instead opted to train as a carpenter. After completing some work for George Lucas, Lucas called on his acting talents for a role in American Graffiti (1973). Several years of Lucas-fed work ensued until the role of Han Solo, and the rest is frozen in carbonite. Had Ford not all but given up acting for carpentry, he’d never have visited Lucas, and perhaps never have had the chance to appear on our screens, save the world and get the girl!

In terms of the modelling world, Kate Moss was plucked from post-vacation airport boredom in NYC by Storm model agency founder Sarah Doukas in 1988. A day, an hour, perhaps even a minute earlier or later, and one of our most significant fashion icons would just be another, regular girl.

The importance of luck and superstition is well-renowned in the capricious world of the arts, whether for auditions, castings, or model agency applications.

But remember, no matter your luck, you need to be 18 years and over to use our text auditions service (£1.50 per text with max of 3 texts per week).

Starting Modelling Work

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

If you want to be sure of regular modelling work, you will sooner or later join a modelling agency. Modelling agencies have access to most of the lucrative work opportunities, but it can take time and a lot of perseverance before you land a contract with one of them. Besides, approaching agencies will require you to have some kind of portfolio of images of yourself. If you are starting out, you may not have many professional examples of your modelling work.

Another good way to get into modelling is to find out where and when the big agencies are holding casting calls. Don’t be put off by the large numbers of hopefuls that turn up to these calls: if you have the looks and the patience, you can reasonably expect to make a mark, even amongst hundreds of others.

Modelling agencies generally advertise their casting calls in the trade magazines and the local press, but it can be hard work trying to keep up with all that’s available. If you spend all your time trying to find out what opportunities there may be, you will leave little time to turn up to the casting calls and make an impression.

This is where Audition Now can help. We keep you updated on the very latest modelling work, texting you direct to your mobile phone. This means that you are not only kept fully informed of modelling opportunities appropriate for you, but also that you have the time to maximise your exposure.

Tips For Success In Modelling Work

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Getting work as a model requires patience and perseverance, but if you feel you have the looks then the time and effort you put into finding the work will undoubtedly pay off.

Most work for models comes through agencies, so it is important to make yourself known to them. You may wish to forward your portfolio direct to them, or to turn up to one of their open model casting calls. These auditions may be opened to members of the public, so you should not be surprised to find queues of hopefuls turning up to them. The competition is particularly fierce in London as the bulk of the work is in the capital, so if you are serious about a career in modelling, London is where you will eventually need to be aiming. Work opportunities exist in the regions, of course, and it may well be that to begin with, you will find it easier to get work outside of London.

When you start out, you need to be clear about the sort of modelling work you want to do. For example, glamour modelling is sometimes taken to be a euphemism for nude modelling, and so you need to be clear on what any modelling assignment involves. At some time or other in your work, the question is sure to come up.

Here at Audition Now, we can access all the latest modelling work opportunities, and keep you informed of them by text direct to your mobile phone.

Modelling Opportunities

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Looking for work as a model can be a frustrating experience, and persistence is an important rule if you want to do well in this business. Unfortunately there are thousands of people – men and women – who flood the modelling agencies with portfolios and sample photos, so selling yourself ‘cold’ like that may not be the most efficient way to get yourself noticed.

Modelling agencies, whether they specialise in catwalk modelling or magazine models, frequently hold casting calls to look out for new faces, and these are very often advertised publicly. It is important to get to as many of these open calls as you can. You may feel disheartened to see how many others turn up to these calls, but remember this is probably a fraction of the number of people who have sent in their material to the agencies, so you will get a fairer viewing. Besides, an agency will always find it easier to judge in person, rather than through looking at stills.

It pays to shop around for modelling opportunities. London is of course where the bulk of the best work is centred, but opportunities can be found in other parts of the country. Again, it is important to have access to all the latest information about where modelling work is coming up.

This is where we at Audition Now come in as we keep you posted via text about all the latest modelling opportunities through our own extensive networking. After all, for the successful model, there is only one rule:  if you can’t get yourself seen, you can’t get yourself work.
