Some folks seem to breeze through auditions with all the grace of Princess Caroline, but for those suffering from a few theatre casting, soap casting or model casting jitters, here are a few exercises to help you de-stress and lift your mood!

• Breathe! Controlled breathing is one of the most effective ways to trick your body into being calm. Try breathing in and making your belly move out, as you exhale suck it in. This type of breathing expands your diaphragm and is a great tool for those in need of an oratory boost!
• Exercise. So you might look a little odd in the line, but the mood and energy boost of just a few squats, push-ups or sit-ups is worth it! A great technique is to lie on your back, legs 45° to the floor, raise your head and neck to 45°, and have your arms straight at your sides (palms down). Pump your arms up and down about a hundred times (breath in for five, out for five). This exercise helps reduce cortisol levels in your body, a key stress agent.
• Find your happy thought. We don’t mean for you to do a Peter Pan and float out of the line, but just to find one unique confidence-boosting measure. Red lippy, a lucky penny, brainstorming your desert island film choices, meditating on a piece of prose – whatever works for you needn’t be public knowledge. Just find something personal and effective.

Our auditions service is only available to those 18 and over – £1.50 per text, maximum of three texts per week.

For those who have not had experience in one, or even both, of theatre acting or screen acting, it is important to know the differences between the two when heading off for that all-important audition, to ensure that you are lending the right nuances to your audition.

Whilst your audition pieces might well not have to change, should they wish to see you act on stage or act on camera, there will need to be differences. They say that screen acting is all in the eyes, and to an extent this is true. You need to be able to express the same emotions but in a more internalised way, as opposed to the big sweeping gestures that you might use on the stage. On screen, the camera might be up very close meaning any huge movements or gestures will look out of place, whilst on stage the more subtle, smaller touches will most probably go unnoticed.

On stage you will also need to be able to project your voice, whilst on screen the microphones used will mean you can talk much more naturalistically without worrying about whether or not the audience will hear you.

Whether you are going for acting auditions for films or to grandiose musical theatre auditions, knowing in advance how best to pitch your audition will land you with a much better chance in getting the role you want. At Audition Now, if you are 18 or over you can also receive up to three texts per week (charged at £1.50 per text) giving you information on the latest auditions, no matter what area of acting you wish to work in.

Never work with children or animals is regarded as timeless advice in the acting industry.

With the amount of superstitions and proverbs fluttering about the performing arts world, scrutinising over nervous actors, aspiring models and such like Dante’s demons, it’s a wonder anybody acts!

Here are a few other performing arts quotes and sayings to mull over before your West End castings or theatre auditions.

“It ain’t over ‘til the fat lady sings,” – A reference to the final vocal styling of operatic sopranos who are, as history tells it, generally a little soft around the edges. Specifically, Brunnhilda’s final arias from “Die Walkure” or “Gotterdammerung” is cited as the actual origin of the saying.

“The show must go on!” – A great life lesson to adopt really, especially in the torrent of theatre auditions, model castings and so on endured by performing artists. Or perhaps, if you’re in similar mischievous spirits as Noel Coward, you can ask yourself “Why must the show go on?”

“Three Blind Mice,” is apparently an unlucky tune due to the fact that it contains the number 3; a traditionally unlucky number!

To use our service you must be 18 years and over. (£1.50 per text with max of three texts per week).

For some film and stage characters, it may be hard to imagine anyone else in the role as the part seems a perfect fit. Many actors don’t think to ask the other question: are they perfectly fit for the role?

There are simple ways to get ready for acting auditions or casting calls, such as choosing the right audition piece, preparing your CV, researching the stage or production company – and even deciding about what to wear. It is also very important to recognize that acting can make heavy demands on your mental, emotional and physical stamina. You should look after your physical fitness as much as you train your mind to learn new scripts or train yourself to control your nerves.

A regular routine of physical exercise such as aerobics or yoga can be of great benefit to the aspiring actor. Fitness and physical stamina are certainly vital for the busy actor wanting to stay healthy through punishing performance schedules.

The fitter you are, the more able you will be to give of your best at acting auditions and casting calls. Casting directors and producers often want to see how alert and responsive a performer you are, whether in a ‘cold reading’ situation or just in conversation.

Here at Audition Now, we provide an up-to-the-minute information service for actors and models to help get you to the latest acting auditions or casting calls. If you are fit for the part, the part will probably fit you.

Whether TV auditions or theatre casting is your forte, we can provide you with the latest news here at Auditon Now.

It can be daunting when you are starting out as an actor to find that there are so many other actors competing with you for the same roles. There are also many production companies not only competing with each other for talent, but also for limited funding resources. You should not be put off by the vast range of projects: in live theatre, tours throughout the UK are usually managed by a small number of production companies, and theatre companies tend to network with each other over actors, as well as over repertoire.

It is worth your while to keep a detailed record of the different acting auditions and casting calls you attend. Over time, this will build up into a useful handbook of the most important producers, directors and casting directors working in Britain today: you will also have a record of what you have performed and to whom. This means you will be prepared for those times when you have auditions before the same people. Observing how these decision-makers choose their talent will make it easier for you to tailor your audition pieces to their needs and interests.

Keeping a record of this information is one good reason for attending as many casting calls and acting auditions as you can.

At Audition Now, we pride ourselves on our extensive experience of British theatre: the networks we have built up over the years help us to keep you informed of all the latest film and theatre casting opportunities.

Most actors know what it is like to live on the edge: part of their talent is to allow that creativity to come out in their work. Equally, there are few actors who don’t know about the struggles in their chosen career, whether it is looking for the next piece of work, or trying to make ends meet.

What is difficult is keeping the practical difficulties and worries separate from your performing talent. As the great theorist and practitioner of the stage, Konstantin Stanislavksy once said: ‘Never come into the theatre with mud on your feet. Leave your dust and dirt outside.’

As an actor you have to be business-like as well as artistic: you have to give of your best in performance of course, at acting auditions or casting calls, but you have to manage your time and energy to find work for yourself after the present job finishes. This is true even if you have an agent, for only you have your best interests at heart.

This is why it pays to have the practical side of your theatre casting career in good hands.

At Audition Now, our expertise is in looking for the right casting calls or acting auditions for you, and keeping you notified of work opportunities in the pipeline. This allows you to exploit your talents to the full, and, as Stanislavsky said, leave behind ‘all the things that ruin your life and draw your attention away from your art.’
